  • ABSTRACT: The economic and social impact of the degenerative pathologies of bone tissue makes necessary the development of synthetic bone substitutes able to exhibit superior bio-functional properties, especially in orthopaedics where the number of surgical interventions for bone reconstruction and regeneration is continuously increasing, more and more involving young and still active patients. In this ambit the biomechanical properties of the bone substitute are particularly relevant, so that it can promote the development and remodelling of new bone tissue under mechanical load, minimising the recourse to fixation techniques and can be as well integrated and resorbed by the neo-forming bone tissue. The remarkable and insuperable biomechanical properties of the natural bone strongly depend on its anisotropic morphology, hierarchically organised from the sub-micrometric to the macroscopic length scale, so that bone tissue when subjected to mechanical load is able to continuously adapt (literal)
