- ABSTRACT: Composite scaffolds with a complex porous micro-macrostructure were obtained by freeze casting gelatin and/or gelatin-HA mixture. The porosity of the materials strictly depended on the gelatine concentration and on the freezing process parameters. To simulate the tissue of an articular site, showing a gradient of mineralization, bi-layered scaffolds made of gelatine and HA-gelatine have been developed. The two layers adhered well, showed similar porosity features so that the junction of the layers in the final scaffold was morphologically undistinguishable. A natural cross-linking agent is used to improve the structural stability of the scaffold in terms of degradation in synthetic body fluid. The swelling of the scaffold was investigated and found to depend on the total porosity, and in addition on hydroxyapatite and cross-linking extents. After swelling test, the two layers were still connected. Preliminary stress-strain evaluations were also performed (literal)
