- ABSTRACT: Nowadays important problems such as osteoporosis, bone fracture and bone remodelling have still to be solved through the design of bone implants. For this purpose, the ideal scaffold should have chemical composition, porosity size distribution and mechanical characteristics as similar as possible to natural trabecular bone. The election material to mimic the mineral part of the bone tissue is represented by a poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite (HA) exhibiting ionic substitutions in both calcium and phosphate sites. Although these levels of substitution are small and depend on the bone age and site, it is well understood that these elements are associated with the properties of biological apatites and play a major role in the biochemistry of bone, enamel and dentin. In particular Sr is an osteoporotic agent and improves the mechanical properties of the bone. Several techniques have been experimented to realize porous scaffolds.
