  • The experimental results show that both coatings prevent surface phase change during sterilization and improve the mechanical properties of the Y-TZP scalpels; they also smoothen the scalpel surfaces by filling up the grooves left by the polishing process, especially in the cutting edge zone. Inparticular, DLC coatings produce the smoothest surface texture but perform poorly in terms of adhesion of the coating layer to the substrate. On the contrary, TiN coatings show increased hardness and good adhesion to the substrate. (literal)

  • The present work addresses the study of yttria-stabilised tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) surgical scalpels produced by sinteringprocess, subjected to manual polishing, and coated with titanium nitride (TiN) and diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film deposited by a physical vapour deposition (PVD) process. The aim is to manufacture a surgical scalpel which is capable of maintaining a sharp cutting edge even after several utilizations. The coating has both the functions of shielding the substrate during the sterilisation cycle and of improving the cutting ability of the blade. A comparison of the characteristics and performance has been made among TiN coated, DLC coated and uncoated scalpel specimens. X-Ray Diffraction analyses have been performed on the specimens, before and after sterilization treatments, in order to investigate the changes in phase content. The structure of the coatings has been studied by means of Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM); three-dimensional surface microtopography was analyzed from AFM data. Microhardness testings have been performed, while the adhesion of the coatings to the substrate has been investigated by means of a tensile test and a customized scratch test (literal)
