Abstract
  • The cultural background of architect-town planners often lead them to consider the creative act as an expression of an artistic will inspired by a Muse. But we need to remember the particular technical and methodological framework, goals and field of actions which distinguish architecture from other forms of art. The architect-Demiurge shouldn't forget that his creative action needs to be interpreted from the perspective of two conceptual triads: the Vitruvian paradigm firmitas-utilitas-venustas and the interaction architecture-planning-society. The city isn't an expression of one or more individuals but is a social event created and developed by a combined action of plans and free-will activities, political wishes and human needs, radicalisms and intercultural fusions, venustas and utilitas. The association of the concept of creativity and city as led to the concept - shared by the scientific community - of the creative city, classified by its constituent sociological components (Florida, 2005). For the purposes of urban planning, we propose that this idea be discussed and remodelled, taking as a point of departure the definition of creativity held by Henri Poincarè: \"The mind uses its faculty for creativity only when experience forces it to do so\", connecting existing elements with new useful relations. (Poincarè, 1908) According to this premise we could then argue that creativity in the city is the way man reacts efficiently to transformations of his habitat. Therefore, to define creativity in relations to the creative city we intend to identify alchemies that foster the creation and development of the city and its identity, as well as those that a city expresses to set free the creativity of its inhabitants, thereby modifying its own identity. Our statement is that creativity in the city resides in the way the \"built city\" - the city of stones, streets and other physical elements - reacts to different cultural influences in a changing society, generating humus to nourish the same creativity. (Esposito De Vita, 2008) The built city (city of stones) is the typical expression of an historical cultural stratification and, today, is under the pressure of social transformations that have occurred, in particular, as a result of migratory flows (Beguinot, 2008). The break in equilibrium has left the city on a crest between two dualities: crisis-conflicts and creativity-freedom (Sassen, 1999). Present scenery is both a challenge, an opportunity and a risk; this research process focuses on an architecture \"of dialogue and for dialogue\" that can provide \"new useful connections\" in the existing city, encouraging interactions between diversities.
