  • This paper examines some biological and epidemiological characteristics of canker stain of plane trees (Platanus spp.) caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata f.sp. platani, focusing on how the inoculum is formed and preserved, and how it spreads. It explains how these characteristics, together with the host response and the environmental conditions, are the factors that determine its capacity for epidemic spread. Some key aspects of isolation in culture, and the main morphological characters of the reproductive forms of the fungus necessary for its identification, are elucidated. The way in which this pathogen can be expected to behave in natural forests of Platanus occidentalis is examined. The paper also attempts to identify potential vectors and establish how canker stain may spread in natural P. orientalis forests. The importance of early diagnosis of the pathogen using molecular tools to prevent spread in Europe is emphasized. (literal)
