  • In this paper a lithium ion battery pack, with graphite based anode, Li(NiCoMn)O2 based cathode and a Li+ conducting polymer electrolyte as separator, was compared to a Pb acid battery pack from the point of view of their utilization as energy storage systems in a fuel cell (FC) power train. The fuel cell system (FCS) was based on a PEFC stack (600 W as peak power) fuelled with compressed pure hydrogen. A controlled bidirectional inverter and a brushless machine of 2.5 kW as maximum power composed the electric drive, which was of the same typology as that installed on electrical commercial scooters. The experiments for this power train were carried out on a test bench able to simulate the real vehicle behaviour and road characteristics. The performance figures of the two storage systems, when utilised in hard hybrid configuration with hydrogen fuel cells, were evaluated assuming the fuel consumption as the main parameter to be optimized. The obtained results evidenced the positive effect of Li batteries on driving range in high load conditions. (literal)
