  • The investigation of the of the highly complex interaction of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and chemical reactions occurring in the combustion chamber of reciprocating engines provides an useful mean in order to improve the performance and emission of future engines. In order to follow the time evolution of combustion process in high temperature and highpressure environment, an in-situ diagnostic technique with high temporal and spatial resolution should be employed. A large variety of techniques was developed and applied to investigate the entire in-cylinder combustion process [1]. High speed backlight, Schlieren and direct imaging have provided important information about spray penetration and vaporization, onset of combustion and soot formation. More recently, the development of advanced, non-intrusive, optical techniques has provided new tools for making detailed in-situ measurements of the processes evolving inside optically accessible engines. These diagnostics are mostly light-based, allow planar 2-D imaging with high temporal resolution and yield even quantitative data. (literal)
