  • The paper aims to evaluate the knocking combustion in an optically accessible single cylinder, port fuel injection, four-stroke spark-ignition engine with a four-valve production head. All the measurements were realized in the transparent combustion chamber equipped with a wide quartz window in the bottom of the chamber. The engine operated at 1000 rpm with stoichiometric mixture and wide-open throttle. Pure iso-octane and mixtures of iso-octane, n-heptane and toluene were used. The study was carried out by optical techniques based on 2D digital imaging to follow the flame front propagation, chemiluminescence and natural emission spectroscopy to detect radical species such as HCO and OH.For all the fuels, HCO marked the propagation of normal flame and the onset of knocking and it was correlated to the hot-spots in the end-gas. OH was identified as marker of knocking phase duration. (literal)
