  • The increasing need of timely assessing the reliability of new automotive products compels to make use of the early failure warranty data. Both the narrow observation period and the moderate size of such warranty data generally make the reliability estimate not very accurate. When the new product is not revolutionary but is the result of improvements introduced in its predecessors, then the past failure data can constitute a valuable source of information. This paper proposes a Bayesian procedure to formalize the prior information about the failure probability of the new product on the basis of the failure data of its predecessor and of the designer information on the effectiveness of planned design/process modifications. Information on changed environment and operating conditions of the new product is also formalized, as well as the effect of required cost reductions for outsourced components is considered. By using this prior information together with the failure data of the new product observed during the early warranty period, more accurate estimate of the failure probability can arise. The proposed procedure is then applied to a case study and its feasibility in supporting reliability estimation is illustrated. (literal)
