  • Recently, semiconductor NWs have been proven to be useful as basic building blocks for photonic components, including optically- and electrically- pumped lasers, polarization-sensitive detectors, electro-optic modulators and solar cells. Silicon is the most important semiconductor since the Si-based devices have dominated integrated circuit devices for many decades. It is clear that a major effort has been made for Si NWs compatible with VLSI requirements. The photonic applications of the Si NWs is a field that has not been investigated much. We will present a detailed optical characterization of the Si NWs obtained by chemical etching. We have demonstrated the light emission of Si NWs in the visible range at room temperature. We studied the excitation and de-excitation properties demonstrating that non radiative phenomena are less efficient compared to Si nanoclusters. These results have been analyzed and open the way to use Si NWs for photonic applications. (literal)
