  • The increasing dependence of EU on energy imports threatens supply security, as stated by the EC Green Paper that emphasises the necessity of defining long-term strategies addressed to a reorganisation of supply and demand, promoting energy saving, renewable use and eventually nuclear energy. Approaching these objectives allows not only increasing security of supply but also meeting the Kyoto Protocol targets and reducing local air pollutant emissions. This paper illustrates the contribution to these topics of the IP NEEDS, funded by the EC under the VI FP (Priority 6.1 “Sustainable energy Systems”). In the NEEDS framework, the TIMES models generator of IEA-ETSAP is used to implement the Pan EU NEEDS TIMES, a modelling platform split up in the national models of the EU countries (EU27, NO, CH, IS) linked into a multiregional approach by energy and emissions trades. The results at country level as well as the preliminary results of the Pan EU model point out an increasing trend of energy imports on the overall time horizon, with a relevant contribution of natural gas and oil products. An in–depth analysis of country models results is performed to identify the key factors for diminishing the EU energy dependence and feasible targets for the implementation of the main EU Directives on energy and environment (literal)
