Abstract
  • The digital divide can occur either as a \"local\" (within a given country) or \"global\" (between developing and industrialized countries) phenomenon. Our study analyse the digital divide in Italy and the factors contributing to this situation at a territorial level (i.e., macroareas: North, Center, South and at a provincial level) as well as by analyzing the characteristics of individuals (in Italy, men and young people are more apt to utilize the new technologies than women and the elderly are). To do this, we used the registration of Internet domains under the \".it\" ccTLD as a proxy. In particular, we analyzed the domain names registered by individuals. The analysis produced interesting results: In Italy almost all the domain names, registered by individuals, are held by few provinces, compared to Italian population and the national income that is distributed almost equally in all Italian provinces Furthermore, when analyzing the factors that contribute to the presence of a digital divide at a provincial level, regression analysis was performed using social, economic and infrastructure indicators. Results show that Italian provinces that have good productivity, a high cultural level, and a greater spending for investment in telephony and telematics are the best candidates for utilization of the Internet.
