Abstract
  • The steel slag is an important resource for the cement industry and construction. These wastes generally have a composition based on aluminum silicates, calcium and iron silicates and a chemistry more or less alkaline. Even the waste incineration slag can be a resource for the industry, provided to remove the residual organic materials and heavy metals. In recent years the need to mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increased the number of studies on the use of slag for the capture of CO2. To achieve a high rate of CO2 capture, however, is necessary to activate the slag prior to use it. In this work was evaluated the carbonation capacity of various types of steel slag, subjected to different activation processes, and was determined an operational way to transfer the experience of the laboratory to pilot application. The experience carried out through the blowing of carbon dioxide on wet steel slag creates two benefits: the ability to take full advantage of inert materials from slag and the reduction of carbon dioxide emitted from the steel production cycle.
