- Abstract
- Acid mine drainage, tailings ponds, mineralized waste dumps and slag heaps are often sources of hazardous heavy metal pollutants. The migration of these toxic pollutants produces an alteration of the chemical and physical environmental parameters of more or less extensive areas.
The environmental remediation of these sites can be pursued by applying different technologies: using in situ or ex situ techniques to decontaminate the polluted soils (soil-washing, physical separation, phytoremediation, leaching, etc.) or adding suitable additives so as to immobilize, by adsorption or transformation to other less-soluble and less-bioavailable compounds, the heavy metals in order to reduce their migration to the surrounding areas.
Through a laboratory research, the paper deals with an investigation aimed at assessing the possibility to immobilize heavy metals and to identify the involved mechanisms using alumina red muds rejected by the metallurgical treatment of bauxite ores using the Bayer process.
After preliminary tests performed at different pH values, in order to evaluate the potential contribution of heavy metal precipitation to their removal, experiments, carried out in reactors equipped with mechanical stirrer, have been conducted on solutions containing singly dissolved heavy metals. Afterwards, on the \"metal charged\" red muds, repeated washing cycles with distilled water have been performed to evaluate heavy metals deadsorption.
Results obtained so far show the potentiality of alumina red muds to immobilize heavy metals; therefore the interest for this kind of waste to be used in the field of protection and environmental remediation. (literal)
