• Protection and valorisation of typical agro-food products, together with preservation and certification of crop germplasm are among the main targets of the common agricultural policy. In this context, olive (Olea europaea L.), a very important oil-producing crop in the Mediterranean area, and its germplasm including more than 1,275 cultivars, particularly in Italy, represents a resource of primary importance The most important steps in the valorisation of regional productions and the exploitation of local cultivars are the knowledge, preservation and maintenance of the genetic resources. In Molise, an Italian region characterised by a remarkable variety of microenvironments, some olive cultivars have settled over many centuries. This work aims at characterising 19 cultivars of Molise by analysing them with SSRs and SNPs markers by comparison with the most important and widespread cultivars from Mediterranean countries.
