- ABSTRACT: Aim of this study was to simulate the effects of a subthreshold periodic stimulation on the sinoatrial node (SAN)activity. As a first step we modified and combined together two models of cardiac activity taken from literature. The resulting model was able to take into account the pulsatile nature of the heart, the vagal and sympathetic modulation, and the response of the SAN activity to external electric stimuli. The second step was to deliver trains of pulses at changing magnitudes and frequencies to the isolated SAN and in presence of the baroreflex control loop for different levels of sympathetic tone. The results of all the experimental conditions showed that for increasing pulse magnitude the ratios SAN frequency / Stimuli frequency were organized into Arnold tongues. A decrease in the synchronization strength, and a lost of higher synchronization orders was obtained passing from the condition of isolated SAN to increasing levels of sympathetic tone. The results obtained for the isolated SAN are in keeping with what was experimentally proved on the aggregates of cardiac cells from embryonic chicken heart, supplying an indirect confirmation of the validity of the model. As for the results obtained under sympathetic activation, it can be said that they confirm the theoretical expectation. Finally, we are reasonably convinced that, although obtained from a simplified model, the above findings can serve as a paradigm for a better understanding of the complexity of electrophysiological events in many pathologic contexts (literal)
