- ABSTRACT: Recently there has been increased attention on the use of near infrared (NIR) light for imaging the interior of biological tissues [1], since near-IR light is able to penetrate up to few centimeters into tissue and it is well tolerated in large doses because it is nonionizing. NIR spectroscopic (NIRS) imaging can be used to visualize regional variations in cardiac oxygenation in the exposed, beating heart using near-IR absorptions of Hemoglobin (Hb), thanks to the very different infrared absorbance spectra of oxygenated Hb (oxy-Hb), deoxygenated Hb (deoxy-Hb), and water. Recent studies have also applied this approach to studies of myocardial oxygenation of isolated pig hearts using a white light lamp and an IRsensitive CCD-array camera as a 2D series of detectors, with a variable-wavelength optical filter permitting image acquisition at different wavelengths [2]. In the last years a new medical imaging technique, known as diffuse optical tomography (DOT), has been developed, in which tissue arrays of infrared sources and detectors are used to obtain maps of illuminated tissues optical properties; current applications of this technique are detecting tumors in the breast and imaging the brain [3]. We describe here a first prototype of a NIR tomograph for myocardial oxygenation studies of small animal isolated hearts. Preliminary tests of this prototype have been performed using some phantoms with different NIR absorption coefficients and an isolated rat heart. The device is able to create 2D false colours images of the phantoms and the heart. (literal)
