- ABSTRACT: The study of the human olfactory system runs into troubles arising from the particular anatomical location and the scarce representation in human cortex. Up to now the attempts to clarify the human neural mechanisms and their cognitive-affective involvement are absolutely not conclusive. Moreover, in regard to fMRI, there is an extreme inhomogeneity around the primary neural olfactory stations that are contiguous to structures characterized by different magnetic susceptibilities (paranasal sinus, air and bone of skull base). In the last years only few reports applying fMRI to the olfactory system have been published. Our work points out a procedure for the fMRI study of the human olfactory system, comparing different analysis models in order to supply an effective analysis method. (literal)
