  • Recently, proton conductor materials have been intensively investigated because of their potential as electrolytes in Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs).[1] Among these, barium doped cerates exhibit good proton conduction under humidified H2 atmosphere in the 400÷700°C range.[2] In particular, BaCeO3 has been reported to have a high proton conductivity when doped with Y. • The modified Pechini process gave the formation of single phase perovskite powders having nanosized morphology and favoured their sintering at low. The electrical characterization was carried out in H2/H2O and dry O2 atmosphere by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, an extensive study on bulk and specific grain boundary contributions to the total conductivity at low temperatures was performed in order to investigate the densified material properties and the activation energies for the conduction processes. A further thermogravimetric study on the water uptake of these materials and a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry analysis on the distribution of D+ ions in deuterated samples contributed to the understanding of protonic conduction. In the wet hydrogen atmosphere (H2/H2O), the BaCe1-xYxO3-ä samples showed significantly higher conductivities respect to dry conditions. The compositions (x=0.15 and 0.2) gave conductivities close to 10-2 Ù-1cm-1 in H2/H2O atmosphere just at 600°C, indicating the sol-gel synthesized cerate as a promising proton conductor electrolyte for IT-SOFCs.
