  • It is worth highlighting that, thanks to the high densification, notwithstanding the Ce substitution with Zr, conductivity values are comparable to ones registered for BaCe0.85Y0.15O3-´ samples prepared by the same procedure (not reported here) and slightly lower than reported data for BaCe0.8Y0.2O3-delta. In order to investigate the stability of these materials in CO2 or humidified atmosphere, thermogravimetric measurements are in progress in N2/CO2 flux, together with XRD analyses of samples exposed to CO2 or humidified environment. Preliminary results showed a high stability of this kind of compounds under CO2 flux (weight uptake < 2%), while the barium effect is under inspection. To conclude, a 5 or 10 % excess seems the proper amount to introduce in order to favour the sintering and to avoid barium substoichiometry and the lowering of the conductivities at the IT-SOFC operating temperatures (500÷800°C). • Doped cerate perovskite oxides are potential candidates for application as proton conducting electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells, thanks to their good protonic conduction under H2/H2O atmosphere. Nevertheless, they have rather poor chemical stability in CO2-containing atmosphere. The key to overcome this drawback could be the partial substitution of Ce by Zr. The aim of this work was the study of BaxCe0.65Zr0.20Y0.15O3-d solid solutions. In particular, the influence of the preparation method based on a modified sol-gel Pechini technique on sintering temperatures and materials properties was inspected. Moreover, a thorough investigation on the effect of the barium stoichiometry on the stability and conductivity of BaxCe0.65Zr0.20Y0.15O3-delta (x = 1, 1.05, 1.10) materials has been performed.
