- The mitigation of anthropogenic CO2 emissions is a key issue to reduce the unbalance in carbon cycle and the consequent global climate change. The increase of carbon sinks
is considered to be one of the main short-to-mid term mitigation options and can be carried on trough different strategies. Biochar is a low-risk strategy compared to other
sequestration options, in which stored carbon can be released by forest fires in afforestations or by leaks from geological carbon storage.
Within the framework of the Italian Biochar Initiative (ITABI), several different lab and field experiments have been performed. The objective of all these studies has been to
investigate the biochar effects on soil fertility and on crop production.
In particular, nutrient availability, microbial biomass and interaction with arbuscular mycorrhizae have been evaluated in the lab experiment, while responses in crop production
following biochar addition have been studied in the field experiments. (literal)
