  • Charcoal burning sites have represented for century an important forest management practice. Infact, charcoal burning is a very ancient technique and information about it can be found since the 17th century in Italy (Lugli and Pracchia,1995). Currently, evidence of this ancient practice, used until the half of the past century, can be found all over Apennine mountains in Central Italy. This poster has the aim to illustrate the potential scientific interest of analysing the time-series of Val Vobbia charcoal burning sites . Little is known about the long-term interaction between charcoal and soil micro-organisms especially mycorrhizae in the soil. In particular a interesting research topic is the study of genetic adaptation of mycorrhizae to long term exposure to high concentration of charcoal in the soil. Currently archaeological research carried on in Val Vobbia sites offers the possibility to analyse different soil layers along the time-series to investigate a number of processes at the different soils-microrganisms interfaces.
