  • This paper reports some results on the emission performance of an advanced CR DI diesel engine burning twelve model diesel fuels. The experiments are part of the co-operative research program “NeDeNeF” (New Diesel Engines and New Diesel Fuels), partially sponsored by the Commission of European Communities. Partners of the project with Istituto Motori were: FEV (Germany), VTT (Finland), NTUA (Greece), Brunel University (UK), Fortum (Finland), LAT (Greece) under the coordination of the IFP (France). The aim of the research was the study of the influence of different advanced diesel fuels on pollutant emissions of the modern DI diesel engines. The twelve fuels matrix was prepared by the fuel producer partners (IFP and Fortum). It is composed of a reference fuel (Base fuel), two blends characterized by different surface tension, two blends with different density, two blends showing a different viscosity and two with a different compressibility. The matrix includes three oxygenated fuels too, obtained adding RME and glycol-ethers in a definite percentage. Tests show the potentiality of advanced fuels obtained with blends of reformulated and oxygenated components in reducing pollutants emissions. This work shows that future emission limits can be reached by improving both the engine and the fuels and studying their interaction. (literal)

Abstract
In fact, due to the new fuel specifications for 2005, an investigation about the contribution of the modern fuel production technology to the future emission regulations approach seems very helpful.
