Abstract
  • The extensive high-resolution mapping of the continental margin off southern Campania region (CARG project) revealed significant morphological and geological features to outline the modifications of the coastal environments since the late Pleistocene and concurred to gather the documentation on the stratigraphic events occurred in the area. Swath bathymetry, acoustic images of seafloor, seismic lines, core and bottom samples were worked out to and implemented a large data base. Pre- and post-glacial beaches were identified off Sele and Bussento river mouths. The oldest ones formed following the seaward retreat of the shoreline during the last stages of the Late Pleistocene sea level drop, which accounted for the growth of a shelf-margin (to the north) and mid-shelf (to the south) littoral body, at least 100 km long, during the lowstand phase. At that time, the Sele river flowed directly through the upper slope into the Salerno Valley intraslope basin and formed a drainage system between 150 and 500 m of depth still preserved. Postglacial sea level rise resulted in a rapid drowning of the shelf , with a partial preservation of the transgressive littoral systems. However, a 1.5 km large beach, resting above the transgressive surface, 90/70 m below the sea level, could be the remains of the Younger Dryas climatic event. The rapid resettlement of the shore progradation during the ~12 ky cold event testifies the sensitivity of the Sele coastal system even to minor climatic oscillations. (literal)
