  • Modiolus barbatus was fed with four different monoalgal diet: Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Isochrysis galbana and Tetraselmis suecica. The effect on PFK and PK activities in digestive gland of M. barbatus and on the animal growth rate was checked in order to obtain some informations about the occurence, in the above mentioned algae, of putative factor stimulating the M. barbatus growth. All four species of microalgae administred to M. barbatus induce increase of PFK and PK activities. The higher PFK stimulation occurs in animals fed on D. tertiolecta, followed by T.suecica. Minor increase on PFK activity is observed in animals fed on I. galbana and P. tricornutum. As far as the PK activity is concerned, a stronger stimulation, with respest to PFK activity, is induced by all the algae used. Biometric measurements showed that Modiolus barbatus fed on T. suecica exhibit higher growth rate, followed by I. galbana and P. tricornutum. Animals fed on D. tertiolecta grow at lower rate despite the higher PFK activity. (literal)
