- Abstract
- Primary immission and secondary formation in the atmosphere of aerosol particles are currently major topics of investigation, due to the relevance of their demonstrated or suspected adverse effects on human health. Fine aerosols in urban atmosphere are known to be composed mostly of organic (OC) and elemental (EC) carbon, as well as of inorganic (sulfates and nitrates) salts (Seinfeld and Pandis, 1998). Their size distributions are known to spread from the micronic scale down to namometric sizes. Whether as primary or secondary pollutants, they turn out to originate mainly from combustion byproducts, in particular emitted by internal combustion engines (ICE's) of vehicles circulating in urban traffic. Here, ICE's actually mean a wide variety of reciprocating engines, operating on a number of different principles (compression- or spark-ignition, two- or four-strokes), with different fuels and in mixed load and driving conditions.
