Abstract
  • Truxene is a planar heptacyclic polyarene system that can easily be functionalized in three diverging directions in space, to serve as an excellent building block for large star-shaped dendritic architectures. A few recent examples showed that truxene is a good energy donor partner if employed in supramolecular arrays like dyads or rotaxanes and that truxene derivatives can act as photoactive cores in star-shaped multichromophoric systems. We report here on the photophysical properties of new supramolecular structures based on a truxene platform, where both Pt(II), Ru(II) and Os(II) polypyridine complexes and BODIPY derivatives have been arranged around the truxene scaffold (see Figures 1 and 2). The optical properties of the arrays and the energy transfer processes that occur upon photoexcitation have been investigated and the results will be presented. In the Pt(II), Ru(II) and Os(II) containing arrays, upon excitation of the truxene singlet, fast energy transfer processes towards the metal based 3CT levels occur, resulting in the final population of the Os 3CT state via multi-cascade energy transfer.[1,2] In the Os(II)2-BODIPY series efficient 1BODIPY ? 3Os energy transfer processes have been observed and details on the mechanisms will be discussed. The studied arrays can thus be regarded as efficient photon collectors for molecular scale electronics, photonics and energy conversion devices. 1. S. Diring, R. Ziessel, F. Barigelletti, A.
