Abstract
  • Electric vehicles, equipped with electrochemical batteries, are expected to significantly penetrate the automotive market in the next few years. Though, the recharge time for battery pack and the autonomy range can constitute a limit, differentservices have to be considered in urban mobility and different kind of vehicles can satisfy this services. Several issues in CNR-ITAE current projects are taken into account from AC fast charge, to recharge and refueling infrastructures, from the choice of the battery technology, up to the use of hydrogen and fuel cell in hybrid electric vehicle. As a matter of fact an appropriate use of fuel cell technology in electric vehicles can now represent an advantageous option both from a technical and economic point of view. This work reports the CNR-ITAE experiences both in the development and realization of a hydrogen range extender city bus and in an Italian Smart Cities project called I-Next. A pure electric city bus, equipped with eight Zebra batteries, was acquired and modified in a fuel cell and batteries hybrid vehicle. In the I-Next project two new vehicles are under study for being realized: a last mile electric vehicle and a mini-bus hybrid vehicle. The future very challenging scenario needs to be analyzed from several point of views. The performance of the electric vehicles in terms of autonomy and functionality have to be married with the interaction with the needs of smart services to citizens and to the public administrations. In this way, the vehicles not only have to be more efficient in the concept of the powertrain, but also have to be smarter and flexible in the relationship with the end-users, the route, the availability of the fuel and in general the city. These thematic are part of the I-Next project and the first results are reported in this work. (literal)
