Abstract
  • The project aims to research and develop a monitoring and intervention robotic framework to answer the needs, as well as some desires, of Viticulturalists from European Mountain Terraced Vineyards (which exist in six European countries). Regarding monitoring, the solution will integrate a robot, a visual inspection system, a wireless sensor network and sensing devices. In what concerns intervention, it will integrate a robot with specific robotic manipulators and tools, such as harvesting, pruning, precision spraying and trimming tools. The robotic framework will be supported by an integrated management and decision support system platform, which will include, among other things, forecasting and growth models. The solution will allow to reduce operational and environmental costs and improve even further wine quality of mountain terraced vineyards. A vineyard testbed and laboratory, with one demonstration pilot in Portugal and another in Italy, will also be part of the project. The dissemination and exploitation of the project's results is assured by including in the project's consortium two Viticulturalists Associations, namely the European organisation set up for the specific purpose of promoting and protecting the mountain viticulture. The Viticulturalists Associations will also be responsible for characterising in detail the needs from Mountain Terraced Viticulturalists. An Advisory Board composed of experts in Mountain Terraced Viticulture and Robotics for Viticulture will be part of the project's governance model to assure the quality of the results. In summary the project will advance robotics abilities and key technologies that are relevant for the mountain agriculture market. The European SMEs will be in the front line by adapting and innovating the existing agriculture tools, sensors and machinery. The European RTD institutions will move forward key robotics technologies - mobile manipulation, grasping, navigation and perception - to 6/7 TRL levels. The safety concerns will be considered both at hardware and software levels, by adopting standards from other more advanced fields. (literal)
