Abstract
  • Genome science has now moved beyond the simple association of genetic polymorphisms with phenotypic variation, and is entering a new phase of discovery. Adapting animal production to satisfy new markets and respond to the changing climate, requires the understanding of how genetic and epigenetic variation are influenced by the environment and control phenotypes. GeneHome embraces this paradigm shift in an efficient and integrated \"open facility\" addressing all aspects to analyse genome and epigenome function. The Genhome \"Research Resort\" brings together the latest generation of equipment, highly trained staff, informatics and statistical resources, computing power, libraries of software and the staff necessary to analyse complex and large datasets. With an open door research laboratory for \"Guest projects\" and collaborators GenHome fosters the exchange of ideas and provide a great depth and diversity of training opportunities. GenHome research projects are building on knowledge of the structure of domestic animal genomes to support and advance international efforts in this field. Fundamental knowledge is being produced and built upon in ground breaking practical studies to resolve biological questions associated with topics such as reproduction and development. Projects on biological themes encompass all levels of genome study, from primary DNA structure, through epigenetics and regulation of DNA expression to RNA stability and translation, which need to be brought together to understand how they control phenotypic variation.
