  • The research product presented for this evaluation has been obtained by researchers operating at Consorzio RFX, which includes also researchers from CNR, ENEA and Padova University, and contribute to the European program on Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion. The RFX experiment, is the most important machine of the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) type in the world. This magnetic configuration is actively studied in Europe, USA and Japan for its potential as a scheme of low magnetic field reactor and for the interesting scientific properties of the plasma produced in it. This work provides the first complete review of driving mechanism for transport and energy confinement in the RFP experiment RFX, possible methods for transport control and improving plasma confinement based on experimental results are also shown. Nuclear Fusion represents a reference journal for the international scientific community working in the controlled thermonuclear fusion. (literal)

  • In order to test the self-organized criticality (SOC) paradigm in transport processes, a novel technique has been applied for the first time to plasmas confined in reversed field pinch configuration. This technique consists of an analysis of the probability distribution function of the times between bursts in density fluctuations measured by microwave reflectometry and electrostatic probes. The same analysis has also been applied to intermittent events sorted out from the Gaussian background. In both cases, the experimental results disagree with the predictions for a SOC system. Abstract
