  • This research product has been obtained by researchers operating at Consorzio RFX, which includes also researchers from CNR, ENEA and Padova University. The RFX experiment, is the largest device of the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) type in the world, a configuration studied for its potential as a scheme of low magnetic field fusion reactor and for the scientific interest of the plasma produced in it. In this paper it is clearly shown for the first time that the intense bursty events found in the edge region of magnetically confined plasmas, responsible of about 50% of the total particle loss, are not related to the avalanche phenomenon described by Self-Organized Criticality models. The general scientific value of the paper and its multi-disciplinary character is confirmed by its publication on Physical Review Letters journal, assuring the best paper diffusion within international scientific community.   • A statistical analysis of the anomalous particle flux in the edge region of the RFX experiment has revealed that laminar times between bursts, which account for more than 50% of the losses, have a power law distribution and that flux fluctuations are not self-similar. These properties are found in contrast with a wide class of self-organized-criticality models so that it is concluded that there is no experimental evidence of avalanche-like process occurrence in the plasma of RFX.
