Abstract
• This paper presents the Institute for Acoustic and Sensors Orso Mario Corbino (IDASC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). The Institute is presented through its ongoing research activities carried out in the three units of the Institute, located respectively in Rome, Brescia and Ferrara. The unit in Rome, where the directorate is located, host groups active in both acoustic and sensors fields. Concerning acoustic, the group is active in different fields, including the development of techniques and instrumentation for non-invasive analysis of ancient painting and acoustic materials, the analysis of environmental noise, both indoor and outdoor, and the reconstruction of acoustic fields. Acoustic principles are also exploited to develop sensors for different parameters such as pressure and the concentration of gases in the atmosphere. The activities dedicated to sensors are also addressed to the development of molecular receptors, such as porphyrins and metalloporphyrins, and the use of such sensors to develop electronic nose systems that have been successfully applied in fields such as the early detection of cancers. The Rome group is also part of the International Centre for Earth Sciences (ICES), an international centre dedicated to the analysis of earth acoustic emissions. The unit of Brescia is focused on solid-state gas sensors, and, in particular, on the development of devices based on metal oxides. Traditionally working with thin films, the group has recently focused its activity on materials with quasi one-dimensional morphology (nanowires). This technology is now used by the Brescia group together with the thin film technology to develop electronic noses suited for different applications, such as food quality control or security. The same materials have also been exploited to develop biosensors and energy harvesting devices such as solar cells and thermoelectric devices. The final goal is to develop a sensor that is autonomous from an energetic point of view, integrating in a single device both the sensing element and the energy-harvesting element. The unit in Ferrara works on acoustic energetics, focusing in particular on the calibration of pressure-velocity probes, the energetic monitoring of complex sound sources and machinery noise, measurement of sound energy velocity field and reverberation time with hyper-intensimetric techniques, precision measurement of sound impedance for audiological and environmental acoustics research, sound recording and active playback of acoustic quadraphonic events for music archives, cinema, multimedia and virtual reality. Thanks to the excellent results obtained, the CNR-IDASC institute is nowadays a reference both at national and international level in the fields of acoustics and sensors, as witnessed by the important conferences organized by the institute, including, for example, the \"4th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, Wind Turbine Noise 2011\" (held in Rome) and the XXVIII Eurosensors conference (to be held in Brescia in 2014).
