- Abstract
- Occupant restraints can be seen as part of a ROPS system. In fact an overturn with a ROPS equipped tractor might still prove fatal if the tractor operator is thrown outside the clearance zone that the ROPS provides.
Currently agricultural tractors fitted with protective structures are often sold with pelvic
restraint belts for operators. There are Standards specifying the requirements for the location of the anchorages and the tests to which they must be subjected. These are the ISO 3776-1989 and SAE 12194-1997.
Directive 74/150/CEE, amended by 2003/37/CE (OTA II, 25 May 2003), provides for tests for
tractor seatbelt anchorages according to Directive 761115/CEE, which is not specific to agricultural tractors. It refers to seatbelt anchorages fitted on all motor vehicles driving on roads at a maximum forward speed of above 25 km/h. Pelvic and torso restraints are planned for the front seats and side rear seats, while pelvic restraints are accepted for all the other seats. According to Directive 761115/CEE pelvic seatbelt anchorages must be capable of withstanding a tensile force equivalent to a load of at least 22250 N ± 200 N.
ISO 3776-1989 and SAE 12194-1997 Standards consider the seatbelt anchorages included in the tractor structure and therefore the tests are studied for assessing the performance of these tractor components. The point is that if the pelvic seatbelts fitted on agricultural tractors are seen as part of a ROPS system, their function, during normal tractor operation in the field, is to avoid the operator being thrown outside the clearance zone in an accidental tractor overturning. On the contrary Directive
76/115/CEE has been studied for all vehicles driving on the road and so is based on a different criterion in
terms of driver safety and tractors are not clearly specified in the Directive. (literal)
