- Abstract
- General background
1. The updated version of ISO 789-10 standard \"Hydraulic power at tractor/implement interface\"
was distributed to delegates for discussion at the 1997 Annual Meeting of Designated Authorities under
AGR/CA/T(96)20. Delegates were of the opinion that the amendment of OECD Codes 1 and 2 with
ISO 789-10 was not all useful and therefore did not appear desirable at that time. The Turin testing station
proposed carrying out comparative tests on different tractors in accordance with both methods to check
differences in measurements [Summary Record AGR/CA/T/M(97)1].
2. At the 9th Biennial Test Engineers' Conference in Omiya, Japan, Turin delegates presented paper
AGR/CA/T(97)33 providing information about test instruments and components needed to verify hydraulic
system performance according to OECD and ISO 789-10 respectively. After discussion delegates found it
premature to consider ISO 789-10 for OECD testing. A Working Group led by the Turin Testing Station,
including Japan, USA, Germany and UK was established to conduct more experiments on the subject
[Summary Record AGR/CA/T/M(97)2, item 7].
3. During the 10th Biennial Test Engineers' Conference in Prague, the US delegation submitted a
proposal to amend the hydraulic power test on the basis of the OECD Codes [AGR/CA/T(99)19], making
mandatory only those parts of ISO 789-10 that are similar to the present hydraulic power test in Codes 1
and 2, whereas additional tests as specified in ISO 789-10 could be carried out at manufacturer's request.
Difficulties were pointed out and the Turin Testing Station was invited to investigate further the behaviour
of hydraulic power under both tests [AGR/CA/T/M(99)2].
4. During the 2000 Annual Meeting, the Turin Testing Station presented fresh results in paper
AGR/CA/T(2000)25 titled \"Comparison between hydraulic power test carried out according to
OECD Code 1 and ISO 789-10\".
Comparative tests had been performed on two tractors of 47.5 and 50.5 kW power and 63.8 and
60.0 l/min oil flow respectively. Comparative tests showed that the ISO 789-10 hydraulic power
test gave lower results than OECD Codes tests. Parts of ISO 789-10 hydraulic power tests
provide information more relevant for manufacturers than users. Furthermore, ISO 789-10
hydraulic power measurement increases cost in time and equipment.
In the ensuing discussion, opinions remained divided as to the commercial interest of reporting
results according to the ISO test method [see Summary Record AGR/CA/T/M(2000)1]. Some
countries stressed the fact that most manufacturers still prefer clearly the OECD procedure.
5. In year 2000 the Turin Testing Station did not receive for testing any tractor with a high capacity
hydraulic system. For this reason no new hydraulic capacity tests could be performed on heavy tractors.
It is recognised that the interest of using ISO 789-10 depends on tractor hydraulic capacity. It is
also recognised that harmonisation in this area would justify the inclusion of ISO test results in
the tractor test reports, as an option and at manufacturer's request. (literal)
