Abstract
  • The tile industry is constantly growing, being the related world market in an expansion period. To support the competitiveness of ceramic products it is mandatory to develop new materials and technologies that, if applied to the industrial processes, allow to increase the product quality and to optimize the processing phases. The porcelainized stoneware market, that includes rustic, semi-polished and polished lines, has an important role since the extremely low values of water adsorption, high wear resistance, breaking load, surface hardness, frost resistance, compressive strength and chemical attack resistance. Ideal for an industrial environment, its use is nowadays extended to commercial and domestic applications because of the high aesthetical qualities. To strengthen the penetration in these new markets, among the other properties, it is necessary to improve the stain resistance. One possible solution is the coating of tiles with thin surface, \"glass like\", silica film. Therefore, the sol-gel deposition technique1 was chosen for its intrinsic compatibility with both the surface substrate and the modern industrial technological processes. The purpose of the present work is to study how synthesis, deposition procedures and thermal treatment (densification) influence the structural and morphological coating characteristics and the properties of coated polished tiles.
