Abstract
  • Frequency distribution of Italian surnames has been analysed in order to identify regions of sharp variation, and to compare these with the location of boundaries inferred from gene frequency maps. The frequency of 600 surnames, of monophyletic origin, estimated from data on consanguineous marriages (1911-1964) in 200 dioceses of Continental Italy and Sicily, have been analysed by \"wombling\" method. The area of highest overall change (boundaries) point to phenomena of restricted mating and/or dispersal. Some of the observed boundaries separate regions between each large difference are observed in the frequency of several surnames; others are due to the presence of extensive clinal variation; a third group of boundaries surround sharply differentiated isolates. Of the 21 significant boundaries described in this study, three (in the Po Delta, Rome, in the South eastern corner of Sicily) overlap those recognized by the same method in a previous study of Italian gene frequencies; other boundaries seem to delimit area corresponding to the three most important regions emerging from the gene frequency maps obtained by the multivariate technique of Principal Component Analysis that reflects ethnic stratification in preroman times.
