Abstract
  • The use of alternative fuels, as biodiesel and ethanol, for duty engines to approach the target of low exhaust emissions without fuel economy and performance penality has been widely invetigated. Recently it is growing the interest in butanol anf bio-butanol as viable alternatives either single or blended with conventional based fuels. In this paper, butanol effects on combustion processes were investagated through conventional methods and optical diagnostics applied in the combusion chamber of a compression ignition engine and a spark ignition engine. Blends of diesel and n-butanol were used in a common rail DI diesel engine running at different operating conditions. Fuel injecion timing and oxygen at the intake were changed in a single cylinder compression ignition engine equipped with common rail multi-jection system. Spray combustion and pollutant formation were investigated though UV-visible digital imagin and natural emission spectroscopy. Flame emissions and spectroscopy were applied in an optical accessible cylinder of a port fuel-ijection, spark-ignition engine with an external boosting devise. the engine worked with a stoichiometric mixture at medium speed and boosting in wiede oper throttle condition. Normal and knocking combustion was tested. Experiments in both the engines demonstrated that butanol allowed to reduce carbonaceus compounds formation and soot emission and to decrease unpleasant effects related to the combustion precess suc ad the fuel deposition burning. Moreover some emission bands of OH radicals could be used as feature of different phenomena related to the combustion process. (literal)
