- Glaciersareamongthebestterrestrialindicatorsofclimatechangeandthusglacierinventorieshave
attractedagrowing,worldwideinterestinrecentyears.InItaly,thefirstofficialglacierinventorywas
completedin1925and774glacialbodieswereidentified.Astheamountofdatacontinuestoincrease,
and newtechniquesbecomeavailable,thereisagrowingdemandforcomputertoolsthatcan
efficientlymanagethecollecteddata.
The ResearchInstituteforGeo-hydrologicalProtectionoftheNationalResearchCouncil,in
cooperationwiththeDepartmentsofComputerScienceandEarthSciencesoftheUniversityofTurin,
createdadatabasethatprovidesamoderntoolforstoring,processingandsharingglaciologicaldata.
The databasewasdevelopedaccordingtotheneedofstoringheterogeneousinformation,whichcanbe
retrievedthroughasetofwebsearchqueries.Thedatabase'sarchitectureisserver-side,andwas
designedbymeansofanopensourcesoftware.Thewebsiteinterface,simpleandintuitive,was
intendedtomeettheneedsofadistributedpublic:throughthisinterface,anytypeofglaciologicaldata
can bemanaged,specificqueriescanbeperformed,andtheresultscanbeexportedinastandard
format.
The useofarelationaldatabasetostoreandorganizealargevarietyofinformationaboutItalian
glacierscollectedoverthelasthundredyearsconstitutesasignificantstepforwardinensuringthe
safetyandaccessibilityofsuchdata.Moreover,thesamebenefitsalsoapplytotheenhancedoperability
for handlinginformationinthefuture,includingnewandemergingtypesofdataformats,suchas
geographicandmultimediafiles.
Futuredevelopmentsincludetheintegrationofcartographicdata,suchasbasemaps,satellite
images andvectordata.Therelationaldatabasedescribedinthispaperwillbetheheartofanew
geographicsystemthatwillmergedata,dataattributesandmaps,leadingtoacompletedescriptionof
Italian glacialenvironments. (literal)
