Abstract
  • In this work we propose an analysis on the effective violence of deflagrations (dP/dt)max of stratified methane air mixtures by assuming that all the methane released has formed a single homogeneous stoichiometric flammable layer on the roof of a sample equipment. To this aim, the adoption of a Computational Fluid Dynamics numerical code is proposed. A specific combustion model has been developed for the simulation of flame propagation in layered mixtures. This code has been then adopted to collect the required data on the explosions varying the degree of filling. Finally an interpretation of the results is proposed to define a modified explosion index KG and to rapidly calculate the maximum pressure, the required data for the vent sizing procedure reported in NFPA 68.
