- Abstract
- An environmentally aware design process is more complex than simply making decisions to incorporate recycled and low-embodied-energy materials or to use local materials. This is due to the fact that every building material, every building system and every construction process impacts the natural environment in numerous ways at every stage of its life cycle from resource extraction to building demolition and recycling of debris. Every design decision involves an environmental compromise and the designer or builder have to evaluate and compare the environmental impacts that occur throughout all the life cycle phases. Therefore, it would be necessary an environmental assessment of all the useful life of a building in relation to each phases: material extraction, processing and manufacture, onsite construction, occupancy, demolition and debris disposal or recycling. But each phase with its inputs and outputs of energy and resources is complex.
An information system is currently in development in order to evaluate the efficiency of deconstruction and demolition process in economic and environmental terms. This tool can also give a technical feedback for the design of new buildings and for building maintenance. It can be, at the same time, an useful tool for the owners and the contractors in the decision process.
The evaluation of reuse and recycling possibilities takes into account some environmental parameters e.g. reduction of waste and of natural resources use, the decrease of CO2 and VOC emissions as well as of energy consumption. (literal)
