  • The primary production, the phytoplankton composition, abundance and biomass have been studied for more than two years, from June 1999 to December 2001, in the North-Western Adriatic Sea at two stations, influenced at a different degree by the Po River plume and representative for the hydrodynamic and trophic variability of the area. The main aims of this study were to describe and quantify the seasonal variations of the primary production and its relationships with irradiance and phytoplankton biomass, and to highlight how the different hydrological and trophic characteristics could influence phytoplankton production and community structure at the two stations. Attention has also been addressed on the variations of phytoplankton production, biomass and composition during the occurrence of the mucilage event in May-July 2000 and during the flood of the Po River in October 2000. The same, tolerant species were the most abundant at both stations, that differentiated mainly in the amount of biomass, higher at the coastal station (E); this led to a different rate of primary production between the two stations, in spite of similar specific production levels. The seasonal cycle of phytoplankton composition, abundance, and production showed a quite similar pattern at both stations. Water column productivity was mainly correlated with the incident PAR at station C and with integrated chlorophyll a at station E. The effects of the mucilage event (May-July 2000) and of the flood (October 2000) were most evident at the offshore station (C), where they caused changes in the relations between phytoplanktonic production and biomass.
