  • Background: the European Commission plans to implement Health lnterview & Examination Surveys (HES) in order to overcome the limitations of Health Interview Surveys (HIS). Aim: the multicentric European IMCAII project aims at assessing the feasibility of performing interviews and objective measurements at home in the context of large scale respiratory surveys at national and international level. Methods: a general population sample living in Central Italy (Pisa) (n=170; mean age 33.0 yrs 20.7 SD, age range 6-93 yrs; 45.9% males) was selected from a pre-existent database of an epidemiological survey performed in 1991-93. An information technology tool was developed by the coordinating centre (IMIM, Barcelona) to integrate: questionnaire design and filling, measurements carried out by sensors, management of fieldwork, data collection monitoring, on-line encrypt transmission to the central server. An interviewer administered questionnaire on socio-demographic characteristics, respiratory symptoms/diseases (e.g. asthma, wheezing/whistling, rinithis), asthma treatment, smoking habits, and spirometry, blood pressure, pulse-oximetry, weight, height were carried out at home; a blood sample to evaluate haemachrome, Reactive Protein and yGT was collected from each subject, in the Institute of Clinical Physiology of National Research Council (IFC-CNR). Results: 64% of expected subjects participated (n=108; mean age 31.7 yrs 19.6 SD, age range 6-82 yrs; 47.2% males; Body Mass Index=22.3x4.9),7% were untraceable and 29% refused. 4.6% of participants performed only the questionnaire,3l 5% questionnaire and measurements and 63.9% questionnaire, measurements and blood test. Asthma diagnosis was present in ll.l% of subjects(66.7%males) and 25% of these took drugs for asthma treatment (33.3% males); 12% of participants had wheezing/whistling (38.5% males) in the last year. 17.6% of subjects were rhinitic (52.6% males); 5.6% of sample had redness for as much as six months each year(66 (literal)
