  • Aim: to assess the effect of chronic exposure to risk factors on allergic respiratory symptoms/diseases in general population samples. Methods: We studied two general population samples (n- 3700; initial age range: 4-97 years) enrolled in 3 cross sectional studies carried out in Northern ltaly (Po Delta) and Central ltaly (Pisa). ln Po Delta, the studies were carried out in 1980-1982, in 1988-1991 and in 2004-2005; in Pisa, the studies were carried out in 1985- 1988, in 1991-1993 and in 2004-2005. All the subjects filled in a standardized questionnaire about health status and risk factors and a sub-sample performed blood, skin prick (SPT) and bronchial responsiveness to methacholine challenge tests. We used generalised estimating equations (GEE) with a logit link to analyse the association between allergic respiratory symptoms/diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, wheeze, attacks of shortness of breath) and r'rsk factors (age, gender, smoking habits, occupational and environmental exposure, body mass index - BMl, residence, lgE, bronchial hyper responsiveness -BHR and result of SPT); through GEE the correlation of data for using the same subjects (within-subject correlation) is taken into account. Results: The results showed an increasing trend in the prevalence of the allergic respiratory symptoms/diseases (1st, 2nd, 3rd survey prevalence: 5.93%, 6.480/o,7 .06% îor asthma; 6.63%, 6.86%, 8.90% for attacks of shortness of breath), during the 3 different surveys, with exception of allergic rhinitis and wheeze which showed a higher prevalence in the second survey (1st,2nd,3rd survey prevalence: 11J0%, 18.11%, 15.72o/o for allergic rhinitis; 13.82%, 2'1.72%, 20.82% for wheeze). GEE showed a significant association between BHR and all the allergic respiratory symptoms/diseases (Odds Ratio-OR, 95% Confidence lntervals-Cl: 3.04, 2.05-4.50 for asthma; 1.57,1.26-1.97 for allergic rhinitis; 3.75, 2.61-5.39 for attacks of shortness of breath; 2.21, 1.76-2.78 for wheeze); positi (literal)
