  • Moreover they contain stabilizing, antioxidant compounds, like polyphenols, that provide long lasting mechanical properties and durability to the HDPE, overcoming the need of using specific synthetic stabilizers. The mechanical data for impact tests on the prepared plaques showed that hazelnut skin fiber provides better results. In particular, in compositions in which no binder was used, resiliency was improved with respect to the chestnut shells by about 30%. The presence of a binder further increases impact strength, especially using hazelnut fiber, in which case the resiliency is almost doubled. This allows to use latter composite in the realization of baskets and cups for injection molding and as packaging panels with high impact resistance. (literal)

  • This research focused on the ennoblement of the high density polyethylene (HDPE) through the incorporation of opportune fibers. As a main problem of the agri-food industry is the management of wastes and their reconversion to value-added products, selected fibers coming from agricultural wastes were included, aimed to getting composites with characteristics of eco-sustainability. HDPE was able to absorb up to 80% by weight of fibers and it was found to be processable through injection molding, without using particular profile presses.Composite material plates were prepared combining the HDPE from collection of tanks for motor oil, with the residues of hazelnut and chestnut processing wastes. The latter have good fibrous characteristics and hundreds of tons are available on the regional territory. (literal)
