• Distance Education is a possible choice for students wishing to attend university courses, and it has the potential to open up the higher educational market to people who otherwise would be excluded. In order to analyse if this potential is exploited, we have carried out a research activity concerning the e-learning market at Italian University, based on a survey involving students of the final year of high school. In this contribution we describe the main obstacles to the growth of this market highlighted by this investigation. In fact, even though information and communication technologies provide solutions for virtual access to educational activities, which means giving new opportunities to people who otherwise could not enrol on traditional university courses, it has been highlighted that the poor knowledge that students have about the university offer of on line courses and about the meaning of e-learning threatens these opportunities. Therefore, universities should adopt strategies for promoting on line courses and increasing student awareness about the potential of e-learning. In addition, it is really important to guarantee the quality in on line courses, making it perceptible and assessable by potential students. (literal)
