  • Purpose: since there is lack of information about the applicability of GINA (Global lnitiative for Asthma) and ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its lmpact on Asthma) guidelines in general practice, this study aims to monitor correspondence between scientific knowledge and clinical management of asthma and rhinitis by evaluating the adherence of ltalian General Practitioners (GPs) to such guidelines and their impact on patients' life quality. Methods: prospective observational study carried out in different ltalian areas (North, Centre and South) involving 107 GPs (of which 54 attended an educational intervention -group A-, and 53 didn't - group B) and their asthmatidrhinitic patients (based on previous diagnosis, drugs prescription or presence of asthma/rhinitislike symptoms). Both GPs and patients filled in a questionnaire on allergic respiratory conditions concerning the previous 12 months. A follow-up is planned after 12 months since baseline. Results: preliminary analyses were carried out on data obtained by 60 GPs (55% belonging to group A) concerning 1083 patients (48% males); patients'age range was 39+17 in males,43+16 years in females (p0.001). Practitioner diagnoses were: 46% rhinitis, 27Vo aslhma, 27% both. Anti-asthmatic drugs were prescribed in group A vs B as follows: controllers (LABA, lCS, Teophylline, Leucotrien antagonists) 30% vs 19%, relievers (SABA) 23Yovs 31%, combination controller/reliever 6%vs 17Yo (p0.001). ln group A,74o/o of asthmatic patients and 68% of rhinitics had good/optimum diseases control, while in group B the same control level was reached by 73o/o of asthmatics and 640/o of rhinitic patients (no statistically signifìcant). Written treatment action plans were more frequent in group A (12% vs ToAi p (literal)
