- A Total Earth Magnetic (EMF)survey along 1600 km of navigation profiles was performed in the Bay of Naples during two oceanographic cruises (R/V Urania, GMS98-01, May 1998 and GMS00-05, October-November 2000, carried out by the Geomare Sud Institute. High resolution magnetic anomaly map of the Gulf of Naples, has been generated by using a grid cell size of 200 m. It is an image map plotted by using the software Surfer v 7.0, in particular a raster map generated starting from grid files. A colorimetric scale expressed in nT and reported on the right side of the map has been adopted in order to quantify the intensity of measured magnetic anomalies. The preliminary interpretation of magnetic anomaly map of the Gulf shows two main belts characterized by significant magnetic anomalies, the first one located offshore the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex and the second one located offshore the Phlegrean Fields volcanic complex, in correspondance to the submarine volcanic banks of Pentapalummo, Nisida and Miseno. Sharp magnetic anomalies occur offshore the Somma-Vesuvius volcano and are related to volcanic bodies cropping out at the sea bottom. The volcanic bodies recognized in the offshore of Somma-Vesuvius appear to be linked to the presence of a strip of eruptive vents, probably settled on a system of NE-SW normal faults. (literal)

- Abstract
- A Total Earth Magnetic (EMF) survey, along 1600 km of navigation profiles was performed in the Bay of Naples during two Oceanographic Cruises (R/V Urania, GMS98-01, May 1998 and GMS00-05, October-November 2000) carried out by the Geomare Sud Institute. The magnetic measurements were in this case zero adding costs, so that measurement grid is not properly uniform. Nevertheless the collected samples have a bettter spatial coverage of those previously measured in the area, such as by airborne magnetic surveys (Agip, 1981). Moreover, it was measured at a short distance from the source and at low ship velocity; therefore the sampling anbd field reconstruction results more accurate in the compilation of a high resolution magnetic anomaly map of the gulf.
The high resolution magnetic anomaly map of the Gulf of Naples has been generated by using a grid cell size of 200 m. It is an image map plotted by using the software Surfer v.7.0, in particular a raster map generated starting from grid files. A grey scale expressed in nT and reported on the right side of the map has been adopted to quantify the intensity of measured magnetic anomalies. The main magnetic anomaly fields recognized on the map based on the geological interpretation and on the correlation with high resolution Multibeam bathymetry recorded by Geomare Sud Institute in the Gulf of Naples (Aiello et al., 2001). The map shows also main morphostructural features of the gulf recognized by Multibeam bathymetry interpretation, i.e. the Dohrn and Magnaghi canyons, the Banco di Fuori morphostructural high and the location of the shelf break in the gulf.
