- ABSTRACT: The microstructure of pressureless sintered ultra-high-temperature ceramics, namely ZrC, HfC, ZrB2 and HfB2 doped with 20 vol% MoSi2, was characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. With regard to the ZrC-MoSi2 system, ZrxSiy compounds and SiC were detected. In the HfC-MoSi2 system, a mixed phase was detected at the triple points and identified as (Mo,Hf)5Si3. For both these two systems, the high wettability of the silicide-based phases on the matrix grains suggests that sintering is assisted by liquid phases. Concerning the borides, the presence of carbides and oxide of the transition metals and MoB was observed well dispersed along the matrix of the composites. At deeper investigations, Mo5Si3 and Mo5SiB2, with Zr or Hf impurities, were detected at the triple points to have a partial wetting tendency. It was also noticed a core-shell structure of the borides, especially pronounced in the ZrB2-based composite. Also in this case, the occurrence of Mo-Si-B (literal)
